The Studio Equipment

Wheelhaus Studio is thoughtfully designed to give students and members access to everything they need to learn, practice, and create, from preparing and building forms to wheel throwing, glazing, firing, and storing finished work.

With dedicated rooms for wheel throwing, handbuilding, and firing, we provide a comfortable environment for both beginners and experienced makers. Our studio blends practical design with the warmth of a creative home, providing dedicated zones for deep work and communal areas where members can recharge, share a coffee, and grow together.

The Wheel Room

Designed for both daily practice and long-term skill development, the wheel room is a bright, functional environment that prioritizes your creative flow.

With 6 SHIMPO wheels available, we ensure that every student has their own station throughout their session. The space includes everything needed for a complete throwing practice: dual concrete and wooden wedging tables, a full set of throwing trimming tools, and a dedicated clay recycling system for black and white clay.

We prioritize a clean and sustainable workspace. Our two-sink cleanup station is equipped with a clay filtration system to manage waste responsibly and keep the studio’s infrastructure running smoothly.

The Handbuilding Room

Designed for building, shaping, and glazing, this separate space is bright, airy. It is centered around large shared tables that offer plenty of room for both small-scale objects and ambitious sculptural projects.

The studio is fully equipped with a wide range of professional tools, organized on open shelving for easy access during your session:

  • Forming & Shaping: Large banding wheels, handbuilding boards, rolling pins, and a variety of ribs, scrapers, and wire cutters.
  • Detailing & Sculpture: A full library of modeling and sculpting tools, pottery knives, needles, and scoring tools for precise assembly.
  • Advanced Equipment: For technical work, the room includes a slab roller for creating smooth, even clay slabs and a clay press for extruding coils and forms in various sizes.
  • Finishing & Glazing: A dedicated selection of glaze brushes, specialized glazing supplies, and heat guns for controlled drying between stages.

Whether you are just beginning or managing a long-term ceramic practice, the room provides the space, technical tools, and flexibility to work comfortably and creatively.

The Kiln & Storage Room

The heart of our technical workflow is a professional Rohde TE 130 S kiln. With a total interior volume of 130 liters, a diameter of 60 cm, and a depth of 40 cm, it provides ample space for both production runs and larger sculptural forms. While the kiln is capable of reaching 1300°C, we typically fire to 1220°C to ensure high-quality, durable results for all studio work.

Because we know how much care goes into every piece, our storage area is designed to protect your work at every stage, from greenware to final firing. Each member receives a private locker and customizable shelf space, which can be configured for everything from delicate espresso cups to tall vessels. The room is organized for efficiency, providing easy access to bisque ware and finished pieces waiting for collection.

Artwork Photography Setup

To support members in photographing their work professionally, the studio also offers a dedicated photography setup for finished artworks and ceramic pieces. Whether you are building a portfolio, preparing images for an open call, or creating material for your website or social media, the setup makes it easy to produce clean, clear images during your studio time.

The setup includes three lights for flexible and controlled results: one directional light, one softbox for soft and even lighting, and one background light. A white backdrop is available for simple, professional images that keep the focus entirely on the work. A camera can also be provided on request for members who need one.

The Kitchen: Community & Comfort

Wheelhaus is designed to feel like a shared creative home, and the kitchen is where our community gathers. Available to all students and members, it’s the perfect place to brew a fresh coffee or share a meal with fellow makers.

Equipped with a stove, oven, kettle, coffee machine, and refrigerator, the space offers everything you need for comfort during longer studio sessions. Whether you are warming up lunch or simply taking a break from your ceramics practice, this communal area makes the studio feel more welcoming and comfortable, especially for those spending the entire day immersed in their craft.
