This is one of my smaller vases, but one I absolutely love. The sgraffito drawings encompassing the vase depict the wetness of early spring and the sprouting of greenery pushing up through the soil. The movement of the white slip brushed on top of the dark black clay body pairs well with the imagery of rain clouds and patches of abstract flowers.
There's a somber allure to the piece as it advocates for the beauty of natures cycles. I love heavy rainfall and the smell that comes with it. The raw power is inescapable. The rain is indiscriminate, and when I'm caught in the rain it grounds me to a physical state of mindfulness. Sometimes, the modern world with all its amenities, financial and social hierarchies becomes difficult for me to associate with. Being in the rain becomes a primitive challenge I can easily understand.
